How the age gap is calculated

An age gap is measured exactly like an age: the span between two dates. The calculator identifies the earlier birth date, counts whole years to the nearest anniversary, then whole months, then the leftover days. Leap years and unequal month lengths follow the same rules used across the site, which are written out in our calculation methodology.

Subtracting birth years is the common shortcut and it is frequently wrong by a year. Two people born in the same calendar year can be almost twelve months apart, and two people born in consecutive years can be a matter of days apart. Only the full dates give a reliable answer.

Why the gap seems to change

The gap itself never changes — it is the fixed distance between two dates. What changes is the whole-year figure people quote, which jumps by one for part of every year. That is why a couple can honestly describe themselves as four years apart in January and five years apart in May.

The years/months/days breakdown removes most of that ambiguity, and the total-days figure removes all of it — which is why genealogists and record-keepers prefer it.

The half-your-age-plus-seven rule

Alongside the gap, the calculator reports each person's current age and the range produced by the “half your age plus seven” convention: halve your age and add seven for the lower bound, subtract seven and double for the upper one. A 30-year-old gets 22 to 46; a 50-year-old gets 32 to 86.

It is worth being clear about what this is. It is a social rule of thumb that has circulated in print since at least the nineteenth century. It carries no legal weight, it is not derived from research, and it produces nonsense below about fourteen. It is included because people look for it, not because it settles anything.

The result is fixed for life: two people born four years and three months apart stay four years and three months apart forever, even though the gap looks smaller as a percentage as they get older.

Studies commonly report that most couples fall within a few years of each other and that larger gaps are more frequent when one partner is older, but outcomes vary far more with communication and life stage than with the number itself. The calculator reports the gap; interpreting it is not something arithmetic can do.
