Working out your age by hand

The everyday method has two steps. Subtract your birth year from the current year, then subtract one more if your birthday has not arrived yet this year. Someone born in June 1990 is 35 in March 2026 and 36 from June onward.

For an exact age you continue past whole years: count complete months from your most recent birthday, then the leftover days. A partial month is never rounded up — it stays as days. That convention, and what happens at month ends and on leap days, is written out in full in our calculation methodology.
