How to read this table
Every instrument here computes chronological age the same way — complete years, complete months, then the leftover days. What differs is which part of that figure the record form asks for, and whether prematurity is corrected. Those two questions are what this table answers.
- Years;months.days — Record the exact chronological age as years;months.days (e.g. 10;11.17). The norm table is selected by the age band that contains that age, so the partial month is never rounded up for the lookup.
- Years;months — Record chronological age as complete years and complete months (e.g. 10;11). The day remainder is not carried onto the form.
- Total months — Record chronological age as a total number of completed months (e.g. 64 months). Used where the age interval, item set or questionnaire is selected by month.
- Rounded to nearest month — Record chronological age rounded to the nearest month: a remainder of 15 days or more rounds the month up, fewer than 15 days is dropped.
14 of the 43 instruments listed have a corrected-age convention for children born preterm, and every one of those is used with infants, toddlers or preschoolers. Age ranges are the publisher-stated ranges for the named edition — verify against the manual you are scoring from, because publishers revise them between editions. Frequently Asked Questions
The recording convention across most cognitive, language and achievement batteries is years;months.days — written 10;11.17 for 10 years, 11 months and 17 days. Complete years and complete months are counted, and the leftover days are reported after the decimal point rather than rounded into the month. Some instruments write the same figure with semicolons throughout (10;11;17); the numbers are identical.
A minority of instruments — the BRIGANCE Screens III being the best known — ask for age rounded to the nearest month, because the rounded figure names the age-specific data sheet or item set. The published rule is a 15-day threshold: a remainder of 15 days or more rounds the month up, fewer than 15 days is dropped. Applying that rule to an instrument that truncates, or vice versa, is one of the most common scoring errors.
It depends on the instrument and the protocol. Developmental instruments used with infants and toddlers — the Bayley-4, ASQ-3, Denver II, PDMS-3 and BRIGANCE Screens among them — commonly correct for prematurity until the second birthday. Cognitive, language and achievement batteries used with school-age children generally do not. Whichever you use, state it explicitly in the report: the two figures can differ by several standard-score points in the first two years.
It depends where in the range the examinee falls. In infancy, norm intervals can be a few weeks wide, so a one-month error can move a composite by five or more standard-score points. In adulthood, bands widen and the same error may change nothing. The risk is concentrated exactly where the decisions are most consequential — early-intervention and preschool eligibility.
