The DIAL-4 is a preschool screening instrument covering motor, concepts and language, plus self-help and social-emotional caregiver ratings. It is widely used in district-wide preschool screening events where dozens of children are screened in a day.
How the DIAL-4 wants the age entered
Record chronological age as years;months. Cut points are given by age band across this short preschool range, so an off-by-one month can flip a screening decision.
The underlying calculation is the same for every instrument โ complete years, complete months, then the leftover days. What differs is which part of it goes on the form. The calculator above reports all four figures at once, so you can copy the one the DIAL-4 manual asks for without recalculating:
- Years;months.days โ the full record-form format, e.g. 4;0.17
- Years;months โ complete units only, e.g. 4;0
- Complete months โ e.g. 48 months
- Rounded to nearest month โ e.g. 49 months (4;1), using the 15-day threshold
The exact date arithmetic, including month-end clamping and leap-day handling, is documented in the calculation methodology.
Worked example
A child born August 29, 2022 and assessed on September 15, 2026:
- Chronological age: 4 years, 0 months, 17 days
- Record on the DIAL-4 as: 4;0
- Day remainder: 17 days โ 15 or more, so a nearest-month rounding rounds up
Enter these exact dates above to reproduce the result. Every figure on this page is computed by the same library that runs the calculator, so the worked example and the tool can never disagree.
