What is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is your age measured in calendar time from your date of birth to the present day. It's the most common way we measure age and is used for legal purposes, medical records, and everyday conversation.
Unlike biological age, which measures how well your body is aging, chronological age is a fixed calculation based purely on the passage of time.
This page is built for people who need the figure in a specific recorded format — a test form, a report, a growth chart. If you just want to know how old you are, how old am I answers the same question in plainer terms.
How to Calculate Chronological Age
To calculate chronological age, you subtract the birth date from the current date. Our calculator handles leap years, varying month lengths, and provides results down to the exact day. Set the "Calculate Age On" date to any future date to answer "how old will I be then?"
Beyond the years/months/days breakdown, results include total months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes, plus a countdown to your next birthday. The exact month-end and leap-day conventions are documented in our calculation methodology.
For educational assessments, chronological age is often expressed in months (e.g., 76 months instead of 6 years 4 months) — use the age in months calculator or the all-format assessment age calculator.
Calculating Chronological Age by Hand
To reproduce this calculator's calendar convention, count completed monthly anniversaries from the original birth date, then count the days since the last anniversary:
- Complete months. Find the last monthly anniversary on or before the test date. When the birth day does not exist in a shorter month, use that month's last day.
- Years and months. Divide the completed-month count by 12. The whole number is the years; the remainder is the months.
- Days. Count calendar days from the last monthly anniversary to the test date.
Column subtraction is a convenient shortcut for the following example: a child born 10 January 2021, tested on 5 June 2026:
| Step | Year | Month | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test date | 2026 | 6 | 5 |
| Birth date | 2021 | 1 | 10 |
| After borrowing a month (31 days) | 2026 | 5 | 36 |
| Chronological age | 5 | 4 | 26 |
Recorded as 5;4.26 in years;months.days — or 5;4 truncated, 64 total months, or 5;5 (65 months) if the instrument asks for age rounded to the nearest month, because the 26-day remainder is 15 or more. Which one you use is an instrument question, not a maths question; the instrument reference lists the format for 40+ assessments. A printable version of this worksheet is available at chronological age worksheet.
Column borrowing is not interchangeable with the anniversary method at month ends. For January 31 to March 1 in a non-leap year, borrowing February's 28 days gives an invalid negative day remainder. This calculator instead observes the one-month anniversary on February 28, then counts one more day: 1 month, 1 day. Follow the methodology for the exact convention.
Which Age Format Does Your Assessment Need?
Different instruments record the same chronological age in different ways. The calculator reports all of them at once; this table is a quick guide to which one to copy across. Always defer to the manual for the instrument you are administering — publishers revise scoring rules between editions.
| Format | Looks like | Typically used by |
|---|---|---|
| Years;months.days | 5;4.26 | The standard record-form format — Wechsler-family, CELF, PPVT and most batteries with age-banded norms. Also written 5;4;26. |
| Years;months | 5;4 | The same figure truncated, used for the norm-table lookup itself |
| Total months | 64 | Developmental screens and research forms, and most growth or milestone tracking |
| Rounded to nearest month | 5;5 · 65 months | BRIGANCE Screens and other instruments that select a data sheet by rounded age — 15 days or more rounds up |
| Corrected age | from the due date | Children born preterm — see the adjusted age calculator |
Working across several instruments in one session? The assessment age calculator shows every format from a single pair of dates, the instrument reference names the format each assessment expects, and the Brigance and Pearson pages go deeper on those specific workflows.
Edge Cases This Calculator Handles
| Situation | How it is resolved |
|---|---|
| Born January 31, age asked on March 1 | 1 month and 1 day — February 28 counts as the one-month anniversary |
| Born February 29, non-leap year | The anniversary is observed on February 28 |
| A partial month at the end of the span | Reported as days; never rounded up into a month |
| Test date earlier than the birth date | Flagged as an error rather than returning a negative age |
| A future test date | Supported — the result is the age that will apply on that date |
Children Born Preterm
Switch the birth history to Born preterm and enter the gestational age at birth to see corrected age alongside chronological age. Corrected age is measured from the due date rather than the birth date, and most guidance applies it to developmental expectations until the second birthday. Vaccination schedules generally use chronological age; follow your clinician's schedule. Medication dosing is medicine-specific and must follow the prescription and your clinical team's guidance.
For the full picture, including gestational and postmenstrual age, use the adjusted age calculator. Whether a specific instrument corrects for prematurity is listed per instrument in the assessment reference, and the corrected age guide explains the convention for families.
Why Use This Calculator?
Our chronological age calculator is built for:
- Educational assessments and standardized testing
- Speech, language, and developmental evaluations
- Medical records and legal documents requiring an exact age
- Answering “how old will I be” on a future date
- Planning birthdays and milestones
Calculations stay in your browser by default. The optional result-link button is the exception: it visibly puts the birth and calculation dates in the URL so another browser can reproduce the answer. Use it only when those dates are safe to share — especially when the date belongs to a student on your caseload.
